A label to respect

The hall you are in comprises four stools of gilded wood and tapestry. They date from the late 17th century. These folding stools were the court seats par excellence during the reign of Louis XIV: while the King and Queen took their seats on large armchairs, etiquette dictated that only a few titled courtiers were authorised to sit in the presence of the sovereigns… an honour reserved for the princesses of the blood and duchesses.
