The only classical château in Périgord

This is the castle that Louis XIV might have imagined if he had settled in Périgord. But it was the Marquis de Hautefort, his faithful adviser, who made it a reality!

New visitor route from 1 May 2025

Plunge into the heart of the 17th century

Your journey begins in 1671, in the private flats of the Marquis de Hautefort. You will gradually enter the intimacy of the Marquis as he receives Colbert, Minister of Louis XIV. Your experience continues in the estate's kitchens, where the intendant will reveal the secrets of organising grand receptions. Sounds, decor, scents and surprise guests: everything is designed to make you experience a great day in the XVIIᵉ century.

Experience life at a château in the 21st century

Enter the private flats of the Baroness de Bastard and the generations who still live there today. Ravaged by fire in 1968, Château de Hautefort was saved thanks to the unfailing determination of this woman and, after her, of Hélène and Michel David-Weill. Today, the third generation lives there with their children when they visit the Dordogne. In this intimate experience with a family passionate about masterpieces and exceptional furniture, you'll discover what life is like at a château in the 21st century!

Relive the 1968 fire

Through 360° immersion, combining sounds, lights, noises, smoke and smells, enter the heart of that tragic night in 1968, when flames almost reduced the château to ashes. Feel the urgency, the struggle to save this heritage and the emotion of its rebirth. A gripping sensory experience to help you understand the history and resilience of Hautefort.

A castle to visit in the Dordogne

A castle in the heart of the Dordogne

Located less than 35 minutes from the Lascaux caves and the village of Sarlat, between Brive and Périgueux, Château de Hautefort is a must-see in this region. The only classic building in the Périgord, it's a must-see castle during your stay in the Dordogne.

Opinions on Château de Hautefort

A castle to visit! Don't forget to book the little guide - she's exceptional and passionate! The history of the château, the gardens, the architecture.... It's all very interesting.

Superb location, very nice tour of the castle, and we had a very pleasant and friendly person to tell us about the history of the castle.

Wonderful, both the château and the gardens. We bought bread baked over a wood fire at the château. A must-see!

Pascale Sivera

We really had a great time at the château and were very well received. A very beautiful place, the interior of the castle to visit, very well maintained gardens in which to stroll, a beautiful long walk possible on the English garden side. A restaurant where you can eat at lunchtime or simply have a drink and a crêpe in the afternoon. We stayed there for 3 hours and will be back.

The château is remarkable and the French-style gardens are extraordinary. Tours of the gardens are available, as well as a "bread oven" workshop that our children particularly enjoyed - they got their hands dirty for real! And we even went home with our own hot bread! - These activities are included in the price of admission, so all you have to do is sign up.
