The pyre illustrates the impact that the Revolution had on the history of the château, as several prisoners were locked up here during the Terror (1792-1794). But unlike many other aristocratic residences, Hautefort was spared the onslaught of the revolutionaries. It was the villagers themselves who took up arms to defend their château when sans-culottes from Excideuil came to attack it.
If you look closely at the wall above the wooden store, you will see a pointed opening that has been filled in. It is likely that this was once the entrance to the chapel crypt. Situated below the heart of the chapel, the crypt was used as a sepulchre. It was blocked up at the end of the 19th century when the de Damas family moved the remains of the lords of Hautefort to the Hôtel-Dieu.
